The University of Pikeville (that’s in Kentucky, y’all) has been added to a small list of American institutions of higher learning to add competitive gaming to the list of sports programs in which they offer scholarships. SCHOLARSHIPS! FOR GAMING!
Wait. Did they say “sports programs?” What is unbelievable to me is the fact that this is just now happening. Where was this 10+ years ago when I was in college? I could have stopped running so much, and just had a jolly good time gaming.
According to coach and alumni Eric VanHoose, as well as Pikeville’s new media director Bruce Parsons:
“It will be a regime a lot like athletics,” Parsons said. “[Students will] have to have a certain GPA. We’ll look at them like student athletes. There will be practice time and video time when they have to study other teams for upcoming competitions. I think there are going to be a lot of students, both nationwide and international, who are going to look at our university who wouldn’t have before.”
I think you are right Mr. Parsons. I do think this will get you a lot of attention that you maybe haven’t gotten before…because WHO THE HECK KNOWS PIKEVILLE? You know what I think of when I hear Pikeville?
That’s right – a HUGE, SCARY PIKE FISH! Should have called the town ScaryFish-ville. Scary, scary, fishville. #KentuckyScaresMe
