Earlier this week, I talked about when a true sequel is actually a good thing. I didn’t even dream of including the classic American novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, on the list of potential victims candidates. That seemed to be an untouchable, stand alone masterpiece. Well, it looks like it isn’t. I know this isn’t the geekiest property, but it speaks to the idea that EVERYTHING is a fair game for sequel now. Nothing is sacred thanks to Robert Downey Jr’s charm! Of course, this one is being issued by the creator herself, so does that change things?
If this wasn’t on the BBC, I would assume I had stumbled onto an Onion-type parody news site:
Go Set a Watchman, which features the character of Scout as an adult, will be released on 14 July.
Lee wrote it in the mid-1950s but put it aside on the advice of her editor.
“I thought it a pretty decent effort.” said Lee in a statement. “I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years.”
Set in the fictional southern town of Maycomb during the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman sees Scout return from New York to visit her father, the lawyer Atticus Finch.
According to the publisher’s announcement: “She is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand her father’s attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood.”
I’m already predicting Tom Hanks to play Atticus Finch in the adaptation. Let’s throw Elizabeth Olson in as Scout and we got ourselves a motion picture!
Seriously though, I wonder if this has anything to do with extending IP protections like the sequel to Gone With the Wind in the 1980s. Paging Professor Garcia!
Actually, since this one was written before Mockingbird, that makes the original novel a prequel!

Much like Temple of Doom was actually a prequel….though it is scientifically proven to be inferior to Last Crusade.

False statement.

I don’t know how I feel about this – it’s going to be one of those books I let everyone else read first, and then tell me whether it’s worth the time or not… I’m just not that excited about it.
