If Only The Geek Movies Were Eligible For this Year’s Oscars!

How does Dark Knight not get nominated for Best Picture?  HOW DOES DARK KNIGHT NOT WIN BEST PICTURE?

Well, because of the Dark Knight snub in 2009, the Oscars were SUPPOSED to start recognizing some more popular content for Best Picture when they expanded the category beyond five nominees.   That hasn’t worked out very well.  While I love Oscar bait indie flicks, I want to make up for the sins of constant snubbing of BRILLIANT geek movies.  To kick off our coverage of Oscar week, we are imaging what would happen this year… if ONLY Geek movies were eligible for nomination.  Surprisingly, you have some truly OSCAR worthy nominees!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

  1. Michael Fassbender- XMen:DoFP
  2. Bradley Cooper- GotG
  3. Michael Keaton- Robocop
  4. Bryan Cranston- Godzilla
  5. Samuel L Jackson- Cap2:  Winter Solider

THE RACE: Michael Keaton is the front runner for best actor in Birdman, but here he gets some love for being the only good thing about Rebootcop. Cooper gets recognized for being unrecognizable in GotG. Fassbender, who was borderline best actor instead of supporting, get the nod for being the best X-actor not named Hugh Jackman. Cranston gets nominated simply because he is Cranston. SLJax get the nod almost as a lifetime achievement award for all the times he’s played Nick Fury.

AND THE WINNER IS:

Michael Fassbender. His Magneto was what made a great cast into an all-world cast. x-men-days-of-future-past-michael-fassbender-is-magneto

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

  1. Tilda Swinton- Snowpiercer
  2. Scarlett Johansson- Cap2
  3. Zoe Saldana- GotG
  4. Jessica Chastain- Interstellar
  5. Emma Watson- Noah

THE RACE:    Swinton got real world Oscar buzz. Cap2 was ScarJo’s best performance in years. Saldana wasn’t that good but this is a courtesy for Jenny. Chastain edged out costar Anne Hathaway from Interstellar. Emma Watson gets the last spot for Noah, which was a SciFi movie, not a biblical epic.

AND THE WINNER IS:

Tilda Swinton.  She was the creepy glue that held together a story of class warfare set on a train that never stops. tilda

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

  1. Big Hero 6
  2. X-Men: DoFP
  3. Captain America: Winter Soldier
  4. Edge of Tomorrow
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy

THE RACE: Obviously, most of the best geek movies are adapted from a book or comic; even BH6 and Edge.

AND THE WINNER IS:

Captain America 2: Winter Soldier. Of all the nominees here, Cap2 had the tightest plot. It really was a smart thriller that happened to have superheroes. captain-america-the-winter-soldier-spoiler-review-d

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

  1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  2. Snowpiercer
  3. Book of Life
  4. Lego Movie
  5. Interstellar

THE RACE:    Fewer movies to choose from in the original category, so Book of Life, Lego Movie, and the terrible final 1/3 of Interstellar join quality entrants Apes and Snowpiercer.

AND THE WINNER IS:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.  Snowpiercer was a close second, but It monkeyed around and let Apes pass it by. Apes really had no flaws in the script. Supported by top notch CGI, the script delivered a believable movie with great dialogue. dawn

BEST ACTOR

  1. Andy Serkis- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  2. Chris Pratt- GotG
  3. Chris Evans- Cap2: Winter Soldier
  4. Hugh Jackman- Xmen: DoFP
  5. James McAvoy- Xmen: DoFP

THE RACE:   Strong field.  Serkis made Ceasar a real character.  Chris Pratt became a superstar as Starlord.  Evans made Cap more than just a cardboard cutout.  Hugh Jackman is more a makeup nom for his body of work.  McAvoy was sorta Leaving Las Vegas meets Mutie Scum.

AND THE WINNER IS:

Andy Serkis! He may get snubbed year after year, but the godfather of motion capture takes home the Oscar here. The character of Caesar was way more than just computers. It was a three ringed Serkis. serkis

BEST ACTRESS

  1. Jennifer Lawrence- X-Men: DoFP
  2. Emily Blunt- Edge of Tomorrow
  3. Angelina Jolie- Maleficent
  4. Shailene Woodley- Divergent
  5. Zoe Saldana- Book of Life

THE RACE:    JLaw was the star of a brillaint cast in the X movie. Emily Blunt was the difference that prevented Edge from being Oblivion Part 2. Jolie was compelling and funny as a bad girl gone good. Shailene was good in a bad movie because she’s a huge star. Zoe was a feminist Classic in a movie that would have been better without Mumford and Sons.

AND THE WINNER IS:

Angelina Jolie.  I’m not a fan of hers, and Maleficent was not a film without flaws, but Jolie was as good in this as I’ve ever seen her. lana-del-rey-sings-in-angelina-jolies-new-maleficent-trailer

BEST PICTURE

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy
  2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  3. Captain America: Winter Soldier
  4. X-Men: Days of Future Past
  5. Edge of Tomorrow

THE RACE: Oh, we’ve talked about all these above.  Let’s get to the winner!

AND THE WINNER IS:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This is the best geek movie since Dark Knight. A complete epic with brilliant acting, amazing CGI, and action sequences. cesar
