Something interesting happened at the box office this week. That is what I am typing here instead of “xxx”.
* Coming in first this week was Age of Ultron grossing $77.2M. That’s a 60% drop, but still a great second weekend for a film that was frontloaded. Globally it is at nearly $900M with China still to open! This film should surpass $1.5B easily.
* Finishing second with $13.3M was Hot Pursuit in its opening frame. The Reese Witherspoon comedy was panned by the critics and looks dead on arrival.
* Number three this week was the Age of Adeline with $5.6M. The that’s a low gross, it only dropped 10% from weekend 2 to weekend 3. That’s a solid hold.
* Pulling in at #4 this week was Furious 7 in its sixth week with $5.2M. The franchise is closing in on the extremely magical $1.5B mark globally. It could pull into a brief stay at #3 all time, but will likely still only wind up #3…for the year behind Ultron and Episode 7.
* Rounding out the top five this week was Paul Blart 2, grossing $5.2M. Despite stinking it up, Blart has more than covered its production and marketing budget so that means someone, somewhere is happy this film was made…
