You’ve seen me praise the film in my review. Jenny liked it as well in her review. The critics combined score over at Rotten Tomatoes was another story. But again, I feel they missed the boat on this one.
To illustrate how wrong I think the critics are on this one, I decided to examine exactly where Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four ranked relative to the other DC/Marvel superhero movies in the post-Iron Man and Dark Knight era.
My findings after the jump.
2008 was an amazing year for superhero cinema. That was the summer that gave us Dark Knight, the greatest FILM ever, and Iron Man, the film that launched the idea of cinematic universes.
So from 2009 to the present has seen a Renaissance of the superhero genre. Here is a chronological list of the DC/Marvel properties adapted from 2009-Present.
- Watchmen
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine
- Iron Man 2
- Jonah Hex
- Thor
- X-Men: First Class
- Green Lantern
- Captain America: The First Avenger
- Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
- The Avengers
- The Amazing Spider-Man
- The Dark Knight Rises
- Iron Man 3
- Man of Steel
- The Wolverine
- Thor: The Dark World
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2
- X-Men: Days of Future Past
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
- Ant-Man
Of these films, I only have the following films BETTER than Trank’s Fantastic Four in the era:
- X-Men: First Class
- Captain America: The First Avenger
- The Avengers
- The Amazing Spider-Man
- The Dark Knight Rises
- Man of Steel
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- X-Men: Days of Future Past
- Guardians of the Galaxy
That means I think Fantastic Four is better than (or comparable to) all of the following movies:
- Watchmen
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine
- Iron Man 2
- Jonah Hex
- Thor
- Green Lantern
- Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
- Iron Man 3
- The Wolverine
- Thor: The Dark World
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
- Ant-Man
That’s right. I have it ahead of several MCU entries; including this year’s Ant-Man and Age of Ultron.
Don’t listen to the critics. Give this film a chance and enjoy it for what it was meant to be and not what people expected.

Amazing Spider-Man is better than FF? That doesn’t say much for it.
