A lonely Martian entered the cinaplexes to do battle with vampire Sandler. Who won the week?
* Finishing first this week was The Martian with $55M in its opening weekend. The buzz is that this is a perfect comp with Gravity, which opened in October to about the same gross, indicating this flick will have legs and little competition for weeks.
* Coming in second this week was Hotel Transylvania 2 grossing $33M in its second weekend. Dropping only 33% is freaking amazing for this stinker.
* Number three this week was Sicario, finishing with $12M in the first frame of wide release (third overall). A good number for an Emily Blunt led thriller.
*Pulling in at #4 this week was The Intern with $11.6M in its second week. This one held on almost as well as Sandler, dropping on 34%. Not bad for a film with mixed reviews.
* Rounding out the top five this week was Maze Runner in its third weekend with $7.7M. The YA sequel has pulled in only $64M, making the franchise’s continuation questionable.
