If you are a heterosexual man of a certain age, you probably remember that one outfit Carrie Fisher wore in that one Star Wars movie. No, not the one with the cinnamon bun hair braids. You know the one I speak of. It was a punchline to that one episode of Friends. Just look up from these words, OK?
Well, about that costume…
So, rumors abound that Disney may actually “retire” that costume. That would mean no new products or advertising featuring it. That would probably make Fisher herself happy given she told her new Star Wars co-star Daisy Ridley not to wear a costume like that.
Let’s face it: while the whole idea of a “slave girl” fits in with that sort of genre that George Lucas was looking to recreate with Star Wars, Leia is a princess and a rebel leader, a fierce politician, and a potential Jedi. Having her in a skimpy metal bikini takes away from all that. We probably realize this better today then we did when Fisher first wore that outfit. So, hey, if this is true, good on Disney.
