A Rarity In Comics These Days Courtesy of Pleasant Hill: An Actual Surprise

Just when I thought I was out…they pull me back in!  After reading all of DC’s Convergence and Marvel’s Secret Wars (final updates coming soon!) last year, I’m definitely suffering from “event fatigue”.  Yet, here I am once again reading the first issue in the next Avengers event, Avengers Standoff: Welcome To Pleasant Hill #1.  Yes, I am a sucker for punishment.

Some spoiler free comments on the best Marvel twist since the late 90’s after the break.

The comic is a bit bland actually, but intriguing.  Our main character who they call “Jim” awakens in the woods with amnesia.  He has no idea who he is or how he got there.  He is found and brought to the nearby town of Pleasant Hill where he is given a place to stay, food to eat and medical care as he recovers.

Pleasant Hill is too good to be true, and you know how the old saying goes.  Even with every advantage “Jim” is given, something doesn’t seem right to him and he is constantly trying to escape.

Nothing much going on for much of the issue…watch “Jim” go to therapy, get a job, plaster a ceiling, make some friends and then…whamo! The plot twist that you never saw coming!  Which in this day and age where everything seems to be spoiled months in advance by the interwebs and the solicits for the comics themselves, was a nice change of pace.

To talk too much about it would enter spoiler territory (as if you’re not already mad I told you about “Jim” plastering that ceiling).  Looking back at it after the fact, of course you see the clues.  There is no shortage of misdirection throughout and even reading it the first time there was something scratching at my brain saying that there was something just not right about what I was seeing.

If you are on the fence about reading this event (which many may be, since we know so little about it), this is a great foot in the door and taste for what is to come.

  1. Yeah, that was a surprise, but I’m not sure it is enough of one to get me to keep going from here. Granted, I am already reading about half the checklist titles, so I might end up doing so anyway.
