Gabbing Geek Box Office Report: I Get It Now

I’ve been filling in for Watson for a while now on the Box Office Report despite my repeated preference to never do these again.  Seriously, why do we do these at all?

Then, after a long conversation with last week’s distant Watson cousin, I finally figured it all out.

See, it’s all about the Free Market.  Audiences buy tickets to show their approval, so a movie that sells many tickets must be better than a movie that sells very few.

See, by this unassailable logic, we can see that The Boss is a better movie than Batman Vs Marge Vs The Monorail.  Both made over $23 million last weekend, but The Boss made an additional $45 thousand more than the action figures slammed together movie, so it must be a better movie than Batsoup.

Likewise, Batsoup is a better movie than Zootopia.  Zootopia only made $14.3 million.  Plus, overall, Batsoup made about $600 thousand more since its release than Zootopia has since its release.  I mean, why else would Batsoup made more money?  It must be because it is simply a better movie.

And continuing down this path, we can see that My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is not as good as those other movies, and yet it is a better movie than Hardcore Henry.

I am sure there are plenty out there to doubt how the Free Market proves quality of movie product based off the quantity of tickets sold.  But I offer one last unassailable example.  Though Deadpool came in 12th for the week, it has overall made over $350 million, compared to Batsoup‘s $296.  Anyone who has seen both movies knows that Deadpool is better than Batsoup.

I mean, when have bad movies ever made a lot of money?
