Watson Ranks the Movies of 2015!

redcarpetu

I didn’t quite see as many movies as last year.  My personal record of 145 movies did not fall, but I did put up another entry in the century club (barely) with 100.  This was not really that good of a year for movies.  2014 was exceptional but 2015, while putting out a good couple at the top, was mostly unmemorable from a film perspective.  What made the list?

5 Reasons SPECTRE Was A Fantastic Bond Movie

SPECTRE opens

I am a huge James Bond fan even if I don’t love every James Bond movie.  Casino Royale was amazing and then Quantum of Solace came in and stunk up the place.  Then we were given Skyfall, an amazing movie and my favorite Bond film of all time.  So to have the entire creative team come back for SPECTRE made me incredibly excited.

Life got in the way of me seeing SPECTRE for far too long.  This is the first Bond film I didn’t see on opening night since the 90s.  But I finally did get to see it and I have to say, the mediocre reviews and sup-bar box office performance has me stumped because this is a fantastic James Bond movie.  Here are 5 reasons why but be warned, they have some SPECTRE and Skyfall spoilers after the break.

The Bandstand: The Most Compelling Musical You Shouldn’t See…Yet

bandstandAlthough Gabbing Geek tends to cover more traditional geek fare we’re also dedicated to geeky subjects of all kinds.  My geekiest obsession that falls outside the expected movie, comic book, and science fiction universes is theater.  I’ve been a passionate fan of musical theater and a few plays for decades and my wife and I have been known to schedule almost all of our vacations around trips to New York City or London to see shows.  Whether you too are a theater fan or just curious about that universe, I’ll be bringing my theater reviews here to Gabbing Geek just as often as I can see the shows.

Next up is the intriguing story of a musical where everything, and yet nothing, works.  Come read more about The Bandstand, currently playing in New Jersey but transferring to Broadway next year.  And it’s an appropriate show to discuss today on our Veteran’s Day here in the United States as the show deals with an important topic for veterans.

Why Was Skyfall The Best Craig Bond Opener? The Answer Is Five Letters Long

SPECTRE opens
That’s not a shattered box office record.

SPECTRE opened in the United States this weekend to strong yet disappointing numbers.  By comparison to almost every other Bond or Daniel Craig movie, SPECTRE should be celebrated.  Unfortunately, the comparison most analysts make is to the previous Craig tuxedo outing in Skyfall which was the most successful Bond film ever released.  Given Skyfall’s strong reputation and the return of the entire creative team for SPECTRE, what caused the somewhat lackluster performance for the 24th Bond film?  Jump after the break to discover the five letter answer.

Why Box Office Matters

ll62uWatson was out of town yesterday so Tom took over our Box Office report with something different.  Sure, he reported the top five movies’ box office and the top zero Broadway shows but then Tom asked an interesting set of questions about why we care.  Find out what he asked and all the answers after the break!

MondoCon 2015: Mind Blowing Fan Art

An amazing piece at MondoCon 2015 by Dave Rapoza.
An amazing piece at MondoCon 2015 by Dave Rapoza.

MondoCon 2015 was the second annual convention put together by the Mondo team that took place this past weekend here in Austin.  If you don’t know (and you should), Mondo is an awesome company that puts out limited edition variant movie posters, vinyl movie sountracks, and other cool things like toys or VHS tapes.  And for a second year in a row they decided to host a convention for all things Mondo.  I missed out on the first year but knowing it was coming back I bought tickets the day they went on sale–a short six months later and I was able to attend the convention.

What I saw was mind blowing.  Head after the break to read more about my time at Mondocon 2015.
