Secret Wars Rankings: Mostly Overrated Edition

Well, we’re kinda, sorta nearing the end of Secret Wars.  Well, the tie-ins anyway.  The new Marvel Universe will launch next week(!!)…but the main Secret Wars series will still be running until December.  It’s odd, but the powers that be say that one won’t spoil the other.  And with the reported 8 month time jump when regular series resume, they do have some padding to avoid dealing directly with Secret Wars fallout.

Over the course of the 5 months or so of this crossover, we’ve seen lots of ebbs and flows of quality.  From series to series and even within series themselves.  Some have gotten better which each issue, some worse.

After the break we’ll look at some of those books among the biggest winners and losers of this weeks Secret Wars Power Rankings.  Tom and Ryan also drop by with their thoughts on the most overrated and underrated books of the rankings.

Jimmy Attempts To Read All Of Secret Wars Part Fifteen (Steve and Tony Edition)

The first comic I remember buying off the spinner rack at a local convenience store was Amazing Spider-Man #275.  That was April of 1986, which would mean I was eleven.  Now, I’m sure I read comics prior to that, but that was the first one I used my own money and set myself on a course to spend many, many more dollars over the next number of years.

But eventually interests change, and money has different priorities.  My pull box at my favorite comic shop got lighter and lighter each month until it was always empty and they recycled it.  I picked up the occasional trade paperback that piqued my interest such as The Walking Dead, Preacher, 100 Bullets and Y: The Last Man.  Not many capes in that selection.  I guess little Jimmy was all grown up.

But then a funny thing happened in the summer of 2006.  I don’t even remember how, but two series grabbed my interest: DC’s Infinite Crisis and Marvel’s Civil War.  As I started to read, the collector juices started flowing again.  As I tracked down waaayyy too many tie-ins and crossovers, I was once again hooked and have been reading consistently ever since.

And doing crazy stuff like reading and posting about all of Convergence (that last post is coming, I promise!) and Secret Wars.  After the break I’ll look at two books that focus on Civil War’s main adversaries, Steve Rogers and Tony Stark: Civil War #1 and 1872 #1.  As well as the Steve-centric Planet Hulk #2-3 and the Tony-centric Armor Wars #3.

Jimmy Attempts To Read All Of Secret Wars Part Ten (Secret Wars Journal Edition)

There is a common title that pops up during Marvel events that tries to give a “view from the common man”.  These books tend to revolve around a newspaper and their staff as they cover the events of the, uh, event.  And they generally manage to get into some hi-jinx of their own.  You might notice a common theme with the naming of these books: Civil War Front Line, Secret Invasion Front Line, World War Hulk Front Line and…Siege Embedded.

In this mixed up, messed up planet that is Battleworld, there really isn’t an opportunity for Marvel to roll out a Front Line-esque tie-in.  Instead they’ve given us not one, but two short story anthology books: Secret Wars Battleworld and Secret Wars Journal.

I’ve looked at the first two issues of Battleworld in Part Four and Part Five respectively.  After the break I’ll have a spoilery look at Secret Wars Journal #1,  Secret Wars Journal #2 and Secret Wars Journal #3.
