Geek Review: Anomalisa

Charlie Kaufman may be one of the most imaginative and unique filmmakers working today.  His work sometimes just scratches the surface of sci-fi, but is more about the human existence, and how lonely that existence can be.  His work is often cerebral, quirky, and worth a trip.

His latest, Anomalisa, continues this streak.  A stop-motion animated feature that is most certainly not for children, the movie manages to work well without really slipping into the uncanny valley.  SPOILER-FREE review after the cut.

Shaun The Sheep: Baaaaaaaad Marketing? (Spoiler-Free Review Too)

Shortly before I succumbed to an epic week of stomach issues and other infirmities too painful to mention, I had a good day within which I was able to take my five-year-old son to see Shaun the Sheep.  It was only upon waking from my fever dreams that I discovered Shaun didn’t do baaaaadly at the box office.  It did horribly.  Not only did the movie not deserve its box office performance, but it has to make me wonder what went wrong.  Find out some of my guesses why this delightful family film failed after the break.

Obscure Geek of the Week- He Could Be Sitting Next to You!

 

Who is the greatest Batman ever?  A popular choice is Christian Bale.  Others say Michael Keaton was and always will be the Dark Knight.  Old school geeks have an fondness for the great Adam West.  NONE of these are the right answer.  No.  It’s not Kilmer or Clooney.  Affleck is playing for second at best.  The right answer is this guy.  There never has been, nor ever will be, a better Batman than Kevin Conroy.

Gabbing Geek Analysis: 2015 Oscar Nominations

Oh…my…God!  The Oscars are my Superbowl so the day the nominations are announced is like the Conference Championship Games.  I also enjoy the Superbowl because, living in Texas, it is a state law that you must love football.  It’s anyone’s year but more and more it is looking like the Patriots are going to…wait a minute.  I was talking about the Oscar nominations.  Sorry.  I get distracted sometimes!  Ooohhhh… SQUIRREL!

The triple crown of true A-List celebrity status has long been being the basis of a clue in the NY Times crossword, being the answer to a Trivial Pursuit question, and doing a voice performance on the Simpsons.  But apparently the Simpsons had to work hard to earn their spot in the group.

Aquaman So Important His World Premiere is Happening Twice

I know everyone is just like me and SUPER excited about the world release of Justice League:  Throne of Atlantis (aka- The Aquaman Animated Film That Watson Is Eagerly Awaiting!)  But because he is the king of the oceans AND DC thought feting him once simply wasn’t enough, Aquaman is getting a Pacific AND Atlantic World Premiere!

Time For Animated Films to Get Nominated For Best Production Design?

The folks over at The Hollywood Reporter ponder whether Big Hero 6, Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and The Lego Movie should be nominated for Best Production Design (which used to be named Best Art Direction).
