Bento Review: Battlestar Galactica Memorial

DIG014260_1._SX360_QL80_TTD_

Normally, I’d avoid a comic based on a licensed property like the proverbial plague, but Comics Bento just ships stuff, so I end up with stuff I normally wouldn’t, like that Youngblood volume, or this trade from Dynamite based off the original Battlestar Galactica.

How was it?  See after the cut.

Bento Review: The Fifth Beatle

Brian-Epstein-graphic-novel-770

The Beatles were one of it not the most influential and popular rock bands of all time.  The Fab Four have often had various other individuals referred to as the “Fifth Beatle,” but Vivel J. Tiwary and Andrew C. Robinson’s hardcover biography, The Fifth Beatle:  The Brian Epstein Story from Dark Horse Comics, suggests the real Fifth Beatle was the band’s manager, Brian Epstein.

Review and maybe some SPOILERS after the cut.

Geektastic Elastic Leggings Are Too Hot To Handle

il_fullxfull.684297466_gpor

Like ZZ Top once said, She’s got legs, and she knows how to use them. Especially when they are covered with amazing geek leggings that are adorned with the Battlestar Galactica Starbuck emblem, or the Star Wars Rebel Alliance, or even the Star Trek Federation insignia. Thanks to Etsy shop owner DeelaDesigns, there are so many to choose from. Now you just have to find your favorite after the break. And – if you don’t like leggings, then Deela as skirts too! Win!

Podcast Reaction: The Ryan Edition

Ryan likes this movie.
Ryan likes this movie.

I’ve been doing podcast reactions for a while now, even before I got tapped to write for this site.  In that time, I have picked on Jenny and Watson quite a bit.  Why not?  Jenny is three ducks in a woman suit who doesn’t know who Max von Sydow is despite his memorable roles in both The Exorcist and Flash Gordon–leading to my theory that someone is finally continuing Flash Gordon‘s “To be continued” tag when Ming the Merciless is revealed to be the bad guy in Star Wars Episode VII.  Watson just has that one picture that makes it rather easy.  Heck, it doesn’t matter what other pictures I use, that picture will be the one that appears on Facebook for any article I write and use it for.

But aside from pointing out just how much Ryan likes the awful, awful Krull, I don’t pick on him that much.

I’m not going to pick on him now, because this post is an intervention.

Original Geek Art: STAR WARS

il_fullxfull.462006039_m4nx

In this weeks edition of “Original Geek Art” we’d like to bring your attention to these beautiful Star Wars hand drawn and colored posters. All credit goes to Ben over at Bensmind. Ben states that when he was younger he used to make books about going out and about in the world where he’d write and draw about his experience. Now, all grown up, Ben is a graphic designer. The Star Wars prints came about because he proclaims himself as a massive sci-fi geek. His ETSY shop proves his passion. You can see anything from what we are featuring, to Star Trek, Game of Thrones, Dark Tower, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Breaking Bad and so much more! See more of Ben’s amazing work after the break…

Aliens Considered

Starfire's people supposedly evolved from cats. The X-Men's Shi'ar supposedly evolved from birds. Too bad that was never followed up on during the X-Men/Teen Titans crossover of 1982.

Most superheroes at some point deal with aliens.  Heck, many of them are aliens.  I’m looking at you, Superman.  The same holds true for science fiction that goes into space in any way, shape, or form.  In fact, space-based sci-fi that completely omits aliens might be more noteworthy than the ones that include them.  Aliens have a tendency to be silly at times when they aren’t handled right, and it is way too easy to not handle them right.  Glue a forehead ridge on an actor, give him a couple of odd quirks, and then call it a day.

Aliens in fiction offer too much of an opportunity to really stretch a creator’s creativity.  It is easy to see why so many would look down on aliens, so let’s consider some of the more successful attempts to create otherworldly races and cultures.
