Normally, I’d avoid a comic based on a licensed property like the proverbial plague, but Comics Bento just ships stuff, so I end up with stuff I normally wouldn’t, like that Youngblood volume, or this trade from Dynamite based off the original Battlestar Galactica.

The Beatles were one of it not the most influential and popular rock bands of all time. The Fab Four have often had various other individuals referred to as the “Fifth Beatle,” but Vivel J. Tiwary and Andrew C. Robinson’s hardcover biography, The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story from Dark Horse Comics, suggests the real Fifth Beatle was the band’s manager, Brian Epstein.

I’ve been doing podcast reactions for a while now, even before I got tapped to write for this site. In that time, I have picked on Jenny and Watson quite a bit. Why not? Jenny is three ducks in a woman suit who doesn’t know who Max von Sydow is despite his memorable roles in both The Exorcist and Flash Gordon–leading to my theory that someone is finally continuing Flash Gordon‘s “To be continued” tag when Ming the Merciless is revealed to be the bad guy in Star Wars Episode VII. Watson just has that one picture that makes it rather easy. Heck, it doesn’t matter what other pictures I use, that picture will be the one that appears on Facebook for any article I write and use it for.
But aside from pointing out just how much Ryan likes the awful, awful Krull, I don’t pick on him that much.
I’m not going to pick on him now, because this post is an intervention.

Most superheroes at some point deal with aliens. Heck, many of them are aliens. I’m looking at you, Superman. The same holds true for science fiction that goes into space in any way, shape, or form. In fact, space-based sci-fi that completely omits aliens might be more noteworthy than the ones that include them. Aliens have a tendency to be silly at times when they aren’t handled right, and it is way too easy to not handle them right. Glue a forehead ridge on an actor, give him a couple of odd quirks, and then call it a day.
Aliens in fiction offer too much of an opportunity to really stretch a creator’s creativity. It is easy to see why so many would look down on aliens, so let’s consider some of the more successful attempts to create otherworldly races and cultures.
