Defending The Grade: Batsoup

70%? That’s a passing grade, right?

Yesterday, the last of the Gabbing Geek crew, Ryan, finally saw Batman Vs. Superman Vs. All Common Sense.  He didn’t like it and left a long, often amusing, ever-expanding when he remembers something else list of the film’s flaws.  For my part, I thought it would be fun to write a tongue-in-cheek reply listing everything that was “right” about the movie.  That was rough because I wanted the same number of points as Ryan’s original post, and he has since added a few more.  There may be more by the time I finish typing this and more still when it goes live.  Check in often and make sure.

However, Ryan made note of the fact that the others ’round these parts, either on post or podcast, rated the movie above a five out of ten.  My own grade was a seven out of ten.  I stand by that.  So, in the interest of filling up space, allow me to explain my reasoning a bit.

The Complete List Of Everything Right With Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice

At last, Ryan has seen and reviewed the eponymous Batman Vs Kramer:  Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.  He didn’t like it.

Well, it wasn’t good, but to be very fair, I will now list all that was right about it.  SPOILERS and such.

Geek Review: Batman V Superman

Like many people, I saw Batman V Superman:  Dawn Is A Dish Detergent over the weekend.  I actually went with a small group and got a small range of opinions.  My group included:

• Me.  Duh.
• My thirteen-year old niece.  She’s a sucker for the Marvel movies, and since I was going home for Easter, I asked her if she wanted to see the movie.  She said yes.
• My brother.  Another geek, mostly.  I had initially asked him if he wanted to come along with our niece and myself and bring his oldest son (age 9) too.  My brother wanted to see the movie first before he took his son.  Understandable.  Then he asked me to get another ticket when I bought them.
• The open seat.  Here’s where everything got complicated.  The original person I got this for was my sister-in-law, who is not a geek.  At all.  But, she got sick Saturday.  My brother asked his son.  The kid wanted to go at first, then changed his mind for some reason no one understood.  The last ticket was eventually used by my brother’s father-in-law, of little geek persuasion.

So, tickets in hand, this motely group went to see the movie.  Review and SPOILERS after the cut.

Batsoup Videos To Make The Day Better

So, the reviews coming in for Batman vs Superman:  Your Childhood Is Dead have been less than positive.

But the movie has brought us some nice videos from enterprising fans who maybe produced a better version of the story than whatever Zach Snyder put together.  I’ll be personally finding out Saturday night, but for now, enjoy some stuff that might make for a nice smile after the cut.

Daredevil And The Punisher Take On Superman And Batman

Marvel/Disney and DC/Warner Brothers have been circling each other, looking for weaknesses, as befits a pair of business rivals looking to earn some of the mighty audience dollars, the most powerful substance in either universe.

So, how has the most recent iteration of this rivalry come up?

Another Review Of “The Martian”

It is a fine tradition here at Gabbing Geek to write up multiple reviews for the same movie as different contributors get to see it.

So, just as Ryan and Jenny shared their own thoughts, here are mine for The Martian.

Possible SPOILERS after the cut, though some of them will be based on my experience with the movie since I saw it in 3-D.  I wasn’t intending to see it in 3-D, but was handed the pair of glasses when I got to the front of the line to turn in my ticket.

SDCC: Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice

I don’t know if I buy Jesse Eisenberg’s Luthor, but wow..the new extended trailer for Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice that just premiered at Comic-Con is soooo much better than the last one.  Watch it after the break.

Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Batfleck! Solo Movie Coming Soon?

If this, Netflix and Charlie Cox don’t make you forget my Daredevil movie, I give up.

It’s not officially official but more “where there’s smoke there’s fire” rumors are popping up again that Mr. Ex-Jennifer Garner is preparing to star in and direct a solo Batman film.  This rumor cycle brought to you by Deadline with the added spin that Affleck will co-write the film with DC’s chief creative officer and current Justice League scribe Geoff Johns.

There is no rumored release date for said movie, but you’d have to think DC/Warner Bros would want this in theatres as hot on the heels of Batsoup and Suicide Squad as possible.  Those two films have release dates of March and August 2016 respectively. When trying to figure out where Warners would place this, keep in mind the current release date for the first Justice League film is Nov 2017.  And at some unknown date in 2017 we are supposed to get the Lego Batman movie.  With Flash and Aquaman feature films due in 2018, I can see some shuffling of DC properties here if this rumor holds up.

There is a Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice panel at San Diego Comic-Con tomorrow that may give us some clarity on all of this.

It is often said on the Gabbing Geek podcast (listen to it!) that I don’t read comics.  Well I did once.  So in talking to my buddy Phil Ray the other day, he asked me to write a post on my ten favorite Trade Paperbacks ever (“other than Watchmen, of course”).
