Back in Episode 21 of Gabbing Geek, the Geeks played a game of “Sequel, Reboot, or LET IT DIE!” In that now legendary segment (my mom liked it), we offered our not so humble opinions on how to manage some prominent Geek film properties. A movie like Goonies, for instance, could be rebooted for a new generation, continued with the original kids now parents to a next generation of Goonies, or Let the franchise die (which is somewhat incompatible with their motto…) Some franchises were destined to be continued, yet along the way the wheels fell off the bus. Let’s make up for Hollywood’s sins and green light a few films in the PURE SEQUEL category.
You probably didn’t realize just how close you came to dying in a fiery explosion with the rest of the planet yesterday. Asteroid 2004 BL86 came within 1.2 million kilometers of Earth (fine, 745,645 miles, but 1.2 million kilometers sounds so much asteroider) and that’s only about 3 times the distance from the Earth to our moon as reported by IFLScience. The asteroid is the size of a mountain or big enough for Bruce Willis to land on and start drilling. And turns out it has its own little moon.
Wait, this asteroid gets its own moon? I’ve been way better than the asteroid all year long but do I have a moon? NOOOO! I want my own moon now, Santa!
Ah. Now we get to the cream of the crop! The ten best films of 2014! Hope you enjoyed your year of films as much as I did mine. This was a strong year for movies; both blockbuster and arthouse. While there wasn’t an all-time Hall of Fame entry (like Dark Knight or Godfather), we did have many 5 star worthy films. Any of these ten films would have been a worthy choice for #1, in fact many of them even flirted with the top spot during the year, but when the dust settled here was the final list.
