What Are The Chances Captain America Civil War Outgrosses Batman V. Superman On Opening Weekend?

civilwarReaders of this blog and listeners to our podcast know that I love box office numbers.  I’ve also recently become intrigued by the Good Judgment project after hearing about them on the Freakonomics podcast.  Their website has a number of political, news, and pop culture questions they invite the public to predict and they recently asked what were the chances that Civil War would outgross Batman v. Superman (which brought in an amazing $166M on opening weekend).

I was surprised to see so many people saying Civil War would outgross Batsoup with almost not thought into the matter, so I decided to make my own prediction and analysis.  Jump after the break to read why I think it is unlikely for Civil War to beat Batsoup and let me know your thoughts in the comments.

If DC Wrote Captain America Civil War

It’d probably go a little something like this exchange after the break.

Spoilers After The Break: Uncanny Avengers #8 Review

uncanny_avengers_9_cover

The only Avengers book I’ve been reading regularly since the end of Secret Wars is All-New All-Different Avengers.  That is mostly because of the presence of Miles Morales.  (I read Uncanny Avengers for about 5 minutes before Peter Parker/Spider-Man left the team.)   And much like I mentioned in my Spider-Women Alpha review, I’m a sucker for crossovers, especially those that interrupt my regular monthly readings with tie-ins.  As such, I’ve been reading the Avengers Standoff event.  Some spoilers and thoughts on the latest chapter, Uncanny Avengers #8, after the break.

Spider-Man Complete Chronology Update 9

SpiderMan Chronicles

And we’re back!  This update took longer than I suspected for many reasons.  Some of them personal, some of them ironing out a few continuity issues, but luckily none of them trying to figure out if it was winter and where Peter Parker was working!

It’s a big update consisting of over 90 issues as we make our way through most of 1981-1982.

As usual, spoilers follow from here on out if you’ve missed out on the last 50 years of Spider-Man and are just getting started.

Slightly Misplaced Comic Book Heroes Case File #60: Ronin

You'll never guess who's behind the mask. Seriously. Even I'm not sure here.
You’ll never guess who’s behind the mask. Seriously. Even I’m not sure here.

When Brian Michael Bendis took over the Avengers titles, he decided to blow up the team.  That was literal in more than a few cases, like Jack of Hearts.  Hawkeye, who Bendis claimed was his favorite character, died in another massive explosion but emerged later thanks to House of M.  These things happen.

But Bendis then brought in a new team that he saw as a chance to do an all-star team like the original Avengers line-up was, but with the all-stars that existed then.  Not all of them made sense, and some of them were questionable picks.  But among the promotional art was a “new” character called Ronin.  Who was Ronin?  Well, that depended on what comic you were reading.

The Punisher Problem

punisher

The second season of Daredevil dropped today.  I’m not one for binge watching, personally, so I have no idea how long it will take me to watch the show, but as of this typing I’ve watched the first episode and liked what I saw.

But the promised appearance of the Punisher had me reflecting that, no matter how popular a character he is, he is a weird anomaly in the Marvel pantheon of a character with little discernible personality and few memorable appearances.

Marvel’s Birthday Gift To Me: Spider-Man In New Civil War Trailer!

civil_war_spider-man
Expect to see this picture a lot. Spider-Man!

I’m too excited to even look too closely at the suit yet.  Classic Spidey, not sure what I think about the flairs.  I like that his eye slots are animated…which make no sense “real life” wise, but is typical Spidey.

Oh, yeah, the new trailer itself is awesome and you can check it out after the cut.

Spider-Man!

Super Bowl 50 – Captain America: Civil War

The Cap 3 commercial after the break is short but gives us a clear drawing of lines between the Avengers in the upcoming Civil War.  Still no sign of a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
