Tom Recommends: Flash Gordon

Gabbing Geek Tom Recommends v2

If all possible outcomes exist in their own separate universes from our own, imagine the possibilities.  The South could have won the Civil War.  Leonardo DaVinci could have left a note explaining the smile on the face of the Mona Lisa.  The Matrix sequels might have been good.

One such possibility would be if George Lucas had managed to get the rights to the Flash Gordon character when he initially sought them.  Denied the characters, Lucas retooled his story ideas and made Star Wars instead.  The success of Star Wars prompted producer Dino De Laurentiis to finally create a movie centered around the character Lucas had been denied the use of.  A flop in its own time, Flash Gordon is rightfully remembered as the cult hit it is today.

Podcast Reaction: The Ryan Edition

Ryan likes this movie.
Ryan likes this movie.

I’ve been doing podcast reactions for a while now, even before I got tapped to write for this site.  In that time, I have picked on Jenny and Watson quite a bit.  Why not?  Jenny is three ducks in a woman suit who doesn’t know who Max von Sydow is despite his memorable roles in both The Exorcist and Flash Gordon–leading to my theory that someone is finally continuing Flash Gordon‘s “To be continued” tag when Ming the Merciless is revealed to be the bad guy in Star Wars Episode VII.  Watson just has that one picture that makes it rather easy.  Heck, it doesn’t matter what other pictures I use, that picture will be the one that appears on Facebook for any article I write and use it for.

But aside from pointing out just how much Ryan likes the awful, awful Krull, I don’t pick on him that much.

I’m not going to pick on him now, because this post is an intervention.

Podcast Reaction: The Pitch-A-Revamp Edition

Frank Drebin is on the case!
Frank Drebin is on the case!

This week on the podcast, the Gabbing Geeks celebrated Watson’s 40th birthday by having Jenny use a faulty mic, so it sounded like Watson was senile and talking to voices in his head.  That was amusing as technical errors went.

But then they pitched some revamped old projects, like the Munsters and Flash Gordon, despite some attempts to actually revamp both of them as Mockingbird Lane (look it up) and an awful Scy-Fy channel show, also known as any Scy-Fy channel show that wasn’t Farscape or BSG.

I have an idea of my own for this.
