Marvel’s ‘Dead No More’ Is Spider-Man Related (Right?)

I thought I saw last week that Marvel’s “Dead No More” teaser was in relation to the return of Steve Rogers as Captain America.  Which made no sense, so I’m glad that whatever I thought I saw was wrong.

Marvel has released a new teaser that you can see above and it is very clear that we are looking for something in the Spider-Man camp of titles.  But who?  Some speculation after the cut.

Pretty Much Official, Miles Morales Joining The Avengers

If it wasn’t official before, just highly rumored, it sure seems like it is a done deal now.  After a few days of teasing, Marvel has revealed the cover to one of their Free Comic Book Day offerings, The All-New, All-Different Avengers.  While their other FCBD drop will be Secret Wars #0, which of course leads into this summers mega event, this new Avengers book supposedly takes place after Secret Wars.

A Spoiler Filled Walk On The Great Web Of Spider-Verse, Part One

When the comic book scholars of the future look back on Spider-Verse they may view the crossover as a disappointment. I can see that. There really isn’t much meat on the bone here. Most issues are generally the same:

• introduce or revisit a Spider-Man from an alternate dimension
• Inheritors attack
• multiversal Spider-Men show up to help
• some live, some die, the survivors escape
• Inheritors move onto the next dimension in search of another meal

Pretty standard and repetitive stuff. But to take this view, is to miss the whole fun of Spider-Verse. The interaction of all these Spiders new and old amongst themselves and the Inheritors. Checking in on old favorites. Seeing the fate of Spider-Men you grew up watching on TV. I’m sure we’ll have Spider-Man multiverse crossovers again in the future (*cough*Secret Wars*cough*) but likely never to this degree again.

And The Award For The Longest and Most Unnecessary Secret Wars Post On Gabbing Geek Goes To…

To a 10 year old Jimmy Impossible, Secret Wars was right in his wheel house.  For one full year the best heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe would be together every month bashing skulls, having mountains dropped on them and bowing before Doom.  Though the tie-ins were subtle, this was really the first huge company wide event at either of the Big Two.  (sequart.org has a nice article comparing Secret Wars, Secret Wars II and Crisis on Infinite Earths and which is responsible for the rise of the endless Events that I keep getting suckered into, which seems like every few months.)

One of the biggest parts of Secret Wars, and in fact the reason for it’s existence, was a promotion for a toy line from Mattel.
