The Rise Of Cinematic Universes

I'm sure it is only a matter of time...
I’m sure it is only a matter of time…

Recently, it was announced that a new Scooby Doo movie would launch a Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe.  We also know that the Men in Black/21 Jump Street movie is supposed to actually happen.

Basically, that means that anything can be a cinematic universe these days.  While sitting around the Gabbing Geek Editorial Office, I came up with a few of my own.  See them after the cut.  Hollywood, feel free to use these for a small piece of the gross.  Not the net.  I won’t be screwed over that way.

Mockingjay Part Two Honest Trailer Is Better Than The Movie

Hunger_Games_KatnissThrone_1Sheet

I liked all of the Hunger Games movies until Mockingjay Part 2.  Even Part 1, which a lot of people did not like.  I thought Part Two was just horrible.  I haven’t read the books so it is hard for me to say how they could have juggled and edited the story to condense it down into one sensible movie.  I understand financially why they didn’t, but quality wise it might have worked out better for all involved.

With the release of Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 on Blu-ray next week (and DVD I guess…do people still buy DVDs?  Does anyone besides me still buy Blu-rays?) the good folks at Honest Trailers give us their take on the film after the break.  Includes massive spoilers, so fair warning if you haven’t seen the movie.

Ryan’s 2015 Movie Rankings

number one (image can be used for printing or web)

Yes, we’re already three weeks into 2016 but I finally managed to put together my movie rankings for 2015.  Because life.  I only managed to see 51 films this year, a paltry sum compared to Watson when he isn’t even trying. And eight of those were on a plane to or from China, making the theater total even lower.  Definitely a busy year, but overall a great one for movies.  Head after the jump to see how I ranked all 51!

Grading My 2015 Bold Predictions

Another Geek Tip: Just Don’t Bother With Divergent. At All.

She doesn't look confused enough to my way of thinking in this picture.
She doesn’t look confused enough to my way of thinking in this picture.

Earlier today, Ryan suggested not seeing the movie version of the third Divergent book.

You know what?  I’m going to take it one step further and say not to bother with the entire Divergent series.  Reasons why and maybe some SPOILERS after the cut.

Trailer Time: It’s Them Darn Hunger Games Again

AttheMovies_t670

Hey, you know what’s awesome about The Hunger Games?

If you said the allegorical elements tying the story into today’s fame-obsessed world, Jennifer Lawrence’s natural charisma, the ongoing struggle between the powerful and the powerless, the nature of rebellion, cool action scenes, or even just Peta thrashing on a bed, man, are you wrong according to the new teaser trailer.  The correct answer is “Prim”.  You know, Katniss’ sister?  Eh, trailer after the cut.

What Movies Could Sneak Into 2015’s Top Ten Grossing Films? (or “How Bad is Ryan’s B.O.?”)

jurassic-world

In a January article by Gabbing Geek’s own Ryan Garcia, he predicted the 2015 Top Ten Grossing films (domestic).  Rule of thumb says that to crack the top ten,  a film will need to surpass $200M+. Some of Ryan’s picks were right.  Some were wrong.    Where will we wind up and what could spoil Ryan’s top ten list?
