In his mini-review of Mad Max: Fury Road, Ryan accurately says that Mad Max is the best movie of the year. That is true. It sits way atop my list for the year so far. He then says only Episode 7 has a chance to pass it up. Go home, Ryan. You’re drunk. Here are some flicks who can go past even the awesomeness that was Max.

Today we celebrate the roses that grew out of a steaming pile of horse manure. It’s easy to bask in the accolades of a strong performance in an epic superhero flick. Chris Reeve got us all started with his turn in Superman. Ledger was all-time in the brilliant Dark Knight. RDJ was amazing in the transformative Iron Man. But what about the people who rise to the occasion in a real stinker? Let’s give them their moment in the sun!
Dear Oscars,
You suck for so many reasons it’s hard to pick just one. You are a self-congratulatory, over-hyped, out-of-touch celebration of how you don’t understand your audience. You pile heaps of affection onto movies that most of your audience didn’t see and couldn’t care about. You are bland, boring, predictable, boring, elitist, and boring. Yikes! I was gabbing with Ryan this week about box office projections (yes…this is what we talk about in real life) and we both scoffed at the lofty box office projections of American Sniper. I thought maybe….maybe, the film could hit the upside of matching Sole Survivor’s $120M. I honestly thought it would finish its run with $80-90M unless it won Best Picture. Ryan even took the Under on that call. Well, I was right about the $90M number….if I predicted that for OPENING WEEKEND!

I also enjoy the Superbowl because, living in Texas, it is a state law that you must love football. It’s anyone’s year but more and more it is looking like the Patriots are going to…wait a minute. The nominees are in so to quote the Joker from Heath Ledger’s Oscar winning performance in the Dark Knight, “And here…we…GO!”
This year the Academy nominated only 8 films for Best Picture. A very interesting group of films. It looks to be between Birdman and Boyhood, but don’t sleep on Sniper making it a race.
First thoughts: No Lego Movie in Best Animated Feature!?!? No Life Itself in Best Documentary!?!? Thought Steve Carrell would miss out on Best Actor but he bumped his way to the front of the line! My worst movie of 145 films got a Best Foreign Film nomination as expected.
Expect more in depth commentary on who will win, who SHOULD Win, and any surprises or snubs along the way!
Because what’s the point of having a giant, geeky list of all 64 movies I saw in 2014 if I’m not going to share it with my fellow geeks? I’ve already listed my ten favorite movies of the year. And I got some great therapy by blasting what I considered the ten worst movies of the year.
