The Rise Of Cinematic Universes

I'm sure it is only a matter of time...
I’m sure it is only a matter of time…

Recently, it was announced that a new Scooby Doo movie would launch a Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe.  We also know that the Men in Black/21 Jump Street movie is supposed to actually happen.

Basically, that means that anything can be a cinematic universe these days.  While sitting around the Gabbing Geek Editorial Office, I came up with a few of my own.  See them after the cut.  Hollywood, feel free to use these for a small piece of the gross.  Not the net.  I won’t be screwed over that way.

The face of every Geek on at least some of the things on this list.

2016.  Did any of us think we’d live this long?  Yeah, probably.  We’re Geeks, not morbid.

So, what sort of Geek Entertainment has us here at Gabbing Geek at least a little curious?  See behind the cut, with some items getting some expert Geek Commentary from the Geek Guru himself, Jimmy Impossible.

Indiana Jones Is Not James Bond

RaidersJonesBeeld

Daniel Craig’s last outing as James Bond will be out very soon.  Craig wasn’t the first Bond and probably won’t be the last.  But recasting is hardly new.  There have been multiple Batmen, Supermen, and probably a new Wolverine fairly soon.

But what about Indiana Jones, I ask knowing the answer.  Well, see after the cut to find out what one producer thinks.

Podcast Reaction: The “Is It A Geek?” Edition

fangirl-rowell

This week on the podcast, the Geeks discussed what is and isn’t a geek property.

Now, I don’t want to cast aspersions over other people’s interests and definitions.  I did not think Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl was a geek book.  I wasn’t even convinced the main character was a geek character.  A fan?  Sure.  No question.  A geek?  I didn’t think so.  Why?  I’ll expand on this a bit after the cut.

Background Geek of the Week: Jedis and Neckbeards

windowslivewriteraninterviewwithgarykurtz-b208gary-kurtz-04-thumbIt is a common theme of this series.  Some amazing Geek property is developed, and the main creative driver gets the lionshare of credit; while others involved blend into the background.  It’s not unfair, really.  George Lucas, for all his modern sins, was the visionary who brought us the Star Wars universe.  He does deserve to be credited with that amazing achievement.  But it is not like the movies got to the bigscreen and DVD (not digitial…) with only Lucas at the helm. Others were involved.  Others helped not only in the production/business side, but they also made key creative choices.  I think it is fair to say Star Wars would not the same without our Background Geek of the Week.   Who is this geek who has done so much in the shadows?
