Road To Secret Wars, Part One

There sure are a lot of people in on this secret.
There sure are a lot of people in on this secret.

Marvel’s big Secret Wars mega-storyarc is coming soon, and if you’ve been following Jimmy Impossible’s posts, you’ve probably gotten a lot of information on what worlds and zones are going to exist and a few of the more recent steps leading to the start of this epic storyline. But Jimmy hasn’t been reading Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers/New Avengers work from the beginning.  I have.  Jimmy actually goes out sometimes.

Secret Wars looks to be an epic story in the making, and Hickman’s been setting this thing up for the past couple years.  People who skipped those steps and jump right into Secret Wars might feel a little lost since they missed the preliminaries.

So, as a public service, here’s what you need to know from the build-up to Secret Wars.  SPOILERS behind the cut.

I'd buy that for a dollar!
I’d buy that for a dollar!

As Marvel continues to ramp up to Secret Wars, they are introducing a line of cheap reprints to give you some background on the various zones of Battleworld.  Or, more specifically, like the DC Comics Essentials issues, they are making the first chapter (or so) of a story arc available for $1 in hopes that you will then buy the ~$20 trade paperback to get the rest of the story.  They can be a good introduction to readers and a cheap way to get your feet wet if you are not familiar with the properties.

As we trek ever closer to the big 2015 events for Marvel and DC (editor’s note: do not call them reboots!), more and more pieces are falling into place and coming into focus.

Up first, CBR has released a nicely compiled Guide to Understanding DC Comics’ Convergence. Including background on the three main time periods that the event will be revisting: Crisis, Zero Hour and Flashpoint. DC has set up each week of this event to focus on one of those time periods so you can pick your favorite and roll with it. They finish by touching on what everyone is wondering…what happens after this event? Is it a reboot (editor’s note: hey!  What did I just tell you!?!) or is it back to status quo of the New 52?

Switching over to Marvel, they started filling in some of the blanks on their Secret Wars Battleworld Interactive Map.  (The map is very cool.  Be sure to click through to it.)
