Late Geek Review: Sense8 Season 1

I’m a busy guy, but I had a lot of free time come up lately and was finally able to finish the first season of Sense8, a Netflix science fiction series.

How was it?  Review and maybe some mild SPOILERS after the cut.

Before I started writing endless Secret Wars posts for Gabbing Geek, I used to work on and write for a site called the Hollywood Stock Brokerage & Resource (HSBR, no “&”, I don’t care what you say).  It was a (the best) Hollywood Stock Exchange (HSX) fansite.  While the site has unfortunately closed it’s doors, I still interact with most of the group on a daily basis.  Gabbing Geek founding member Ryan “don’t call me hose311” Garcia was also a contributor to HSBR and foolishly recruited me here.

In recently rambling writing about Superman: Earth One, I mentioned that around the turn of the new millennium I wrote an article that Rising Stars by Earth One writer J. Michael Straczynski would make a great movie.  While I pulled that observation out of the Impossible memory vaults, I wondered what else I had written in said article, and if any of them had come to pass.

So let’s hop in the Delorean, look into the Pensieve, travel naked back in time courtesy of Skynet and revisit and update that post.

The Problem With Superman

I’ve never regularly collected Superman comics.  As you can probably guess by what I tend to write about, I’ve always been more of a Spider-Man fan with Batman a very, very close second.

Nothing against the big blue boy scout, and I’m not even sure why he ranks so low on my interest level.  Maybe he is too powerful and I relate more to the hero that is more worried about getting home with a cake for his Aunt May’s dinner party than how to beat the Shocker this go round.

I have a reputation on Gabbing Geek as a guy who doesn’t like comic books.  This knock is generally well deserved.  I don’t like much anymore.  But there is a certain kind of comic that even to this day will cause me to get dressed, get in the car, head to the comic shop, and buy a comic sit in my underwear, fire up the ol’ tablet, click Comixology on my browser, and download a digital file.  What are these amazing tales you ask?

Spinning The Web

The groundwork for the ideas at the center of Spider-Verse are rooted way back in Amazing Spider-Man Vol 2 #30 (2001) by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr.  The next handful of issues of the series would see the debuts of Ezekiel Sims and Morlun.  And also the introduction of the concepts of Spider-Totems, beings who feed on them and Ezekiel building bunkers to hide Totems from Inheritors.

Time Travel Considered

May or may not be stylish.

At some point every geek franchise goes for time travel.  Superman circles the globe at high speeds to make sure he can be in two places at once.  Captain Kirk needs to find some humpback whales.  I dream of dumping Barney back in the paleolithic age where he belongs.  Time travel is what every geek has considered at some point.

But, how exactly does it work?

The Problems With Marvel’s Civil War

Those guys in the back probably want to back away from this right now.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were fairly excited to learn the third Captain America movie would be an adaptation of Civil War, a mini-series where the various Marvel heroes lined up on two sides over a law that required superheroes to register with the American government or go to prison.  The series dealt with issues regarding national security and the American reaction to terrorist attacks on our soil.

It also had some huge problems that almost guarantee the movie version will be better, if only by default.
