No Mr. Bond, I Expect You To Watch These Honest Trailers

SPECTRE opens

Spectre is the first Bond film I didn’t see in the theatres since…well, I guess Die Another Day (which I think I only watched for the first time last year).  I’ve never been a huge Bond fan, though I have seen all the films.  I just find sometimes that they get too ridiculous and the puns would drive me crazy.  Especially last going off with Brosnan.

So the Daniel Craig, I guess it’s safe to call them rebooted Bonds films have been more up my alley.  They are a bit of a catch-22 for me though.  What I like about them is that they get away from a lot of the corniness and one liners, etc. that frustrated me about many other Bond films.  However in doing so, they really just become Generic Spy Thriller Movie.  Which I don’t mind, but they are not very “Bond-y”.

Moving on, I was let down by Spectre (I wrote up some of my thoughts in a comment on Ryan’s review) especially after Skyfall, which is probably my favourite Bond of all time.  After the break catch up on the Honest Trailers for Skyfall and Spectre where they touch on one of my issues with the new film.  Remember how I said the Craig films weren’t full of Bond tropes?  Well, many are back this go round.   It’s no wonder I was down on it.

Ryan’s 2015 Movie Rankings

number one (image can be used for printing or web)

Yes, we’re already three weeks into 2016 but I finally managed to put together my movie rankings for 2015.  Because life.  I only managed to see 51 films this year, a paltry sum compared to Watson when he isn’t even trying. And eight of those were on a plane to or from China, making the theater total even lower.  Definitely a busy year, but overall a great one for movies.  Head after the jump to see how I ranked all 51!

5 Reasons SPECTRE Was A Fantastic Bond Movie

SPECTRE opens

I am a huge James Bond fan even if I don’t love every James Bond movie.  Casino Royale was amazing and then Quantum of Solace came in and stunk up the place.  Then we were given Skyfall, an amazing movie and my favorite Bond film of all time.  So to have the entire creative team come back for SPECTRE made me incredibly excited.

Life got in the way of me seeing SPECTRE for far too long.  This is the first Bond film I didn’t see on opening night since the 90s.  But I finally did get to see it and I have to say, the mediocre reviews and sup-bar box office performance has me stumped because this is a fantastic James Bond movie.  Here are 5 reasons why but be warned, they have some SPECTRE and Skyfall spoilers after the break.

Gabbing Geek Box Office Report: No, Watson Is Not Back Yet

ll62u

Hey, another weekend passed, and our usual box office guy, Watson, is still on special assignment covering the civil war in Ukraine.  He said there was geek value to it, and who are we to say no to Watson putting himself in harm’s way?

So, here’s another box office report.

Spectre Number One At The Box Office. Still No Madame Xanadu Film.

I have to admit, I’m shocked that a 2nd or 3rd tier hero like The Spectre even has a major motion picture, let alone one that would make the top of the box office.  Tom would be a better one to talk all things Spectre since I’ve really never read much about him, but Tom is on double secret probation for his Russian box office report last week.

[Editor’s note: JIMMY!!!!]

What?  That Russian report was…you’re not talking about that are you…why are you looking at me like that…I didn’t…wait…Spectre…not The Spectre.  Whoops!  Anyway, let’s see how the new Bond film, not the second film in the new DC Cinematic Universe did after the break.

Why Was Skyfall The Best Craig Bond Opener? The Answer Is Five Letters Long

SPECTRE opens
That’s not a shattered box office record.

SPECTRE opened in the United States this weekend to strong yet disappointing numbers.  By comparison to almost every other Bond or Daniel Craig movie, SPECTRE should be celebrated.  Unfortunately, the comparison most analysts make is to the previous Craig tuxedo outing in Skyfall which was the most successful Bond film ever released.  Given Skyfall’s strong reputation and the return of the entire creative team for SPECTRE, what caused the somewhat lackluster performance for the 24th Bond film?  Jump after the break to discover the five letter answer.

Indiana Jones Is Not James Bond

RaidersJonesBeeld

Daniel Craig’s last outing as James Bond will be out very soon.  Craig wasn’t the first Bond and probably won’t be the last.  But recasting is hardly new.  There have been multiple Batmen, Supermen, and probably a new Wolverine fairly soon.

But what about Indiana Jones, I ask knowing the answer.  Well, see after the cut to find out what one producer thinks.
