We here at Gabbing Geek LOVE box office reports.  Ok….JUST me and Ryan.  Everyone else seems to hate them.  We’ve talked a lot about it the last few weeks, so let’s look at the winners and losers of this year’s box office as we wait for the Martian to officially kick off the Fall movie season.

Where Does the Josh Trank Fantastic Four Movie Rank Against Other Superhero Flicks?

You’ve seen me praise the film in my review.  Jenny liked it as well in her review.  The critics combined score over at Rotten Tomatoes was another story.  But again, I feel they missed the boat on this one.

To illustrate how wrong I think the critics are on this one, I decided to examine exactly where Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four ranked relative to the other DC/Marvel superhero movies in the post-Iron Man and Dark Knight era.

Four Fantastic Reasons YOU SHOULD SEE The Fantastic Four

If you happened to listen to our podcast the other day, you would have known that I was looking forward to seeing the new Fantastic Four movie. My heart was broken on air when I found out that the Rotten Tomatoes average review score was at a measly 18%, only to spiral downward Thursday morning to a whopping 8% – dear god! That’s only 2% better than Paul Blart 2. I was ready for this movie to be DOOMED.

But you know what? The critics are suffering from MCU syndrome. They have all been spoiled for too long. And sometimes they get it wrong, just see these previous examples.  Fantastic Four is a fun movie! That’s right – I like it! Forget about losing the Star Wars standalone film.  Josh Trank’s next assignment will be directing Joey Tribbiani’s next Gonorrhea commercial based on  the 10% Rotten Tomatoes score that Fantastic Four is currently sporting.  But I gotta tell you.  It ain’t fair.  Fantastic Four is a smart movie that delivers something bold and fresh.  Find out why the critics missed the mark after the jump.

Trank Stank? Director Out On 2nd SW Solo Film!

There actually IS some news to cover that broke over the weekend. Fortunately, it is Star Wars related. Chronicle and FF director Josh Trank has been fired so hard he turned to glass amicably parted ways as director of the second SW standalone film. Why?

Disney Announces Star Wars Dates, Frozen 2

Disney’s annual shareholder meeting took place today in San Francisco and they took this opportunity to explode the Internet.  First, they announced that Star Wars Episode VIII: The One With Four Letters In Its Roman Numeral will be released on May 26, 2017.  Disney confirmed the second of the new trilogy will be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, some of the best Breaking Bad episodes).  That release date puts it head-to-head with the Lego Batman Movie (assuming they don’t blink…but they will) and right in between Terminator: Genisys 2 (May 19) and Fantastic Four 2 (June 2) if either of those get made (they won’t).  And just a few weeks after Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (May 5).  Toy Story 4 is still set for June 16 of that year, making it a Disney dominated summer–much like every summer forever it seems.  More news after the break.
