Defending The Grade: Batsoup

70%? That's a passing grade, right?
70%? That’s a passing grade, right?

Yesterday, the last of the Gabbing Geek crew, Ryan, finally saw Batman Vs. Superman Vs. All Common Sense.  He didn’t like it and left a long, often amusing, ever-expanding when he remembers something else list of the film’s flaws.  For my part, I thought it would be fun to write a tongue-in-cheek reply listing everything that was “right” about the movie.  That was rough because I wanted the same number of points as Ryan’s original post, and he has since added a few more.  There may be more by the time I finish typing this and more still when it goes live.  Check in often and make sure.

However, Ryan made note of the fact that the others ’round these parts, either on post or podcast, rated the movie above a five out of ten.  My own grade was a seven out of ten.  I stand by that.  So, in the interest of filling up space, allow me to explain my reasoning a bit.

SPOILERS for the movie after the cut.

Jennifer Lawrence As Captain Marvel? Why The Shakeup At Marvel Studios Makes This Possible

Who has two thumbs, made the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and just orchestrated a huge corporate move to give himself more freedom to make awesome Marvel Studios movies? This guy. PS It's Kevin Feige.
Who has two thumbs, made the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and just orchestrated a huge corporate move to give himself more freedom to make awesome Marvel Studios movies? This guy. PS It’s Kevin Feige.

News broke yesterday that Marvel Films was being reorganized within the Disney company so that President Kevin Feige would report directly to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn.  While news of a studio reorganization is usually the stuff for entertainment industry publications, this involves beloved geek properties in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and actually has some fantastic consequences for fans of the Marvel films.  Marvel Studios is now free to go after bigger talent for their main roles–we might even have a chance to see Jennifer Lawrence as Captain Marvel!  Jump after the break to find out why it’s now possible!

All The Cool Kids Are Doing It: An Impossible Ant-Man Review (Spoilers)

AntManPosters1-640x389I don’t have the guts or knowledge or care enough to put myself out there like Ryan and predict the top ten grossing films of 2015.  But one thing I’ve steadfast to in the Gabbing Geek Bullpen has been that I thought Ant-Man would end Marvel’s blockbuster roll.  And it turns out I was right.  (What a different time we live in when an opening of 58 million dollars is considered a disappointment.)  Besting only The Incredible Hulk‘s opening weekend (and finishing dead last if you adjust Incredible Hulk for inflation).

I just never thought Ant-Man on his own would be a draw.  He was not one of the Marvel big hitters, and he never stepped up to the plate and hit a home run with a trailer like other B-Listers Guardians of the Galaxy.

But does any of that mean it was any good?  If you are not tired of reading Ant-Man reviews from Ryan, Watson, Jenny and Tom, I share my thoughts after the break.  Be warned, there will be spoilers.

Least Shocking News Of The Day: Spider-Man Confirmed For Civil War

Civil_War_poster_2015
Cap and Tony are trying to help Spidey out of that ridiculous suit.

After months of speculation, Kevin Feige confirmed today via The Hollywood Reporter that:

“[Tom] Holland will report immediately to the set of the currently shooting Captain America: Civil War, which Marvel has scheduled for a May 6, 2016, release and in which the newest Spider-Man will make his first onscreen appearance.”

It will be interesting to see how big a role Spider-Man will have since this is technically a Captain America movie, I think every Marvel character outside of Thor, Hulk and Daredevil are set to appear and there’s no way Spider-Man’s exact story arc from the comic book version of Civil War will likely be replicated.

In any case, this is going to be awesome!
