Public Intel–Everything You Need To Engage In Secret Wars

In the landmark 50th episode of the Gabbing Geek podcast, the Geeks had a lengthy discussion about the current Secret Wars event.  Part of the exchange went something like this:

Ryan: Armor Wars is awesome!!!!!  You guys should read it!!!!
Watson: You’ve lost me already.  I need to know the details from a nearly three decades old Iron Man story to read this?  I don’t think so.
Ryan: You don’t need to know anything about the old Armor Wars story.
Watson: Uh huh.
Ryan: Na uh.
Watson: Uh huh.
Ryan: Na uh.
Watson Uh huh.
Ryan: Uh huh.
Watson: Na uh…dammit!  Ok, I’ll read it.

The conversation did get me thinking though…what prior knowledge do you need to read some of these books?  Many share the names of events I may not have read.  What if, for example,  I haven’t read the original Infinity Gauntlet (and why haven’t you…but that is another column) can I read the new series?

Secret Wars Rankings: M.O.D.O.K. Strikes Back

No big droppers, but two big upwards movers in this week’s Secret Wars Power Rankings.  Marvel Zombies vaulted into top ten territory and M.O.D.O.K. Assassin recovered from last week’s drop of 5 and then some.

This week also brought the last (?) new Secret Wars series with Hank Johnson: Agent of Hydra.

After the break we’ll examine those series and also get Ryan and Tom’s thoughts on this weeks most overrated and underrated in the rankings.

Jimmy Attempts To Read All Of Secret Wars XXII

Much like the publishing of Secret Wars itself, my read through has fallen behind schedule.  Nothing of the epic Convergence proportions (yet)…but I still have a lot of catching up to do over the next few weeks.

Secret Wars Rankings: Over Under Upside Down

One of the great things about all these Secret Wars crossovers is that so many are quality reads.  The quality varies of course.  Some are outstanding while others trail behind, but most everything is worth checking out.  This also makes it incredibly tough to rank them.

There are almost 50 unique series now.  And when attempting to rank them books fall into clusters where there is little difference in quality.  Hence when a series has a new issue that is awesome or degrades in quality from its predecessors, the series can seem to drop or rise greatly in the rankings.

After the break we’ll look at this weeks biggest movers and shakers on the Secret Wars Power Rankings.  There are also three new books this week which had a ripple effect in the rankings.  And some of my cohorts drop by with their overrated/underrated opinions.  (Spoiler alert, overrated: Watson.)

The Secret Wars Power Rankings – August 11, 2015

Marvel’s Secret Wars event is a fascinating experiment in storytelling.  Not only is it a complete reboot of the Marvel universe, it’s also the rare cross-over event where every series is new and presents a jumping on opportunity for all readers.  You may know the story/universe that the series is based upon but it isn’t required to jump on board.  But with over a half century of unique titles to choose from, it can be a bit daunting.

Although we’ve provided plenty of reading guides for the build-up to Secret Wars and Jimmy’s own complete Secret Wars read-through, this post presents all series in a power ranked list.  We’ll be reposting every week with the new power rankings so come back to Gabbing Geek to see if your favorites moved up or down.  Think a series deserves a different rank?  Let us know in the comments.  Jump after the break for the full rankings!
