Slightly Misplaced Comic Book Heroes Case File #55: The Sea Devils

There once was a time when various comics companies would just toss random characters out there and see what stuck.  While the Silver Age version of characters like the Flash and Green Lantern first appeared in DC Comics’ Showcase, that particular comic was initially intended as an anthology to introduce new characters.  In point of fact, the first character to be featured in Showcase was a firefighter named Fireman Farrell.  He got three short stories in that issue and as near as I can make out was never seen again.

As a digression, Farrell’s last story featured a national news TV crew following Farrell and his company around as they fought a fire, but that was to cover a story about a local (and apparently unpopular) ballot initiative to give the firemen a raise so they could do stuff like send their kids to camp (that was treated as a tragedy).  One woman interviewed said the teachers deserved a raise first, and a home viewer decried that woman as “stupid”.  I sure would like to know why wanting a raise for a nation’s educators is stupid.  Or why a local ballot initiative was national news.  I guess the point is I don’t miss Fireman Farrell.

But that “let’s see what works” approach is my best explanation for the Sea Devils.

Review: Legends Of Tomorrow

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premiered last night after months of anticipation.  Could it deliver on the solid foundation that Flash has brought us for the last year and a half?  Could a team show work in an hour-long format?  Will Mr Freeze actually be a good guy?  Jump after the break for a full review.

I’ll admit I ran out of steam and interest with the release of Convergence #8.  It took me awhile to get around to completing my reading of the tie-ins, and it didn’t help they were some of the weaker tie-ins of the bunch.  Plus Secret Wars was full steam ahead over at Marvel and I was excited to move onto that.  As such, this final post on DC’s big early summer event got lost in the shuffle.

But since I am contractually obligated to finish these posts, I’ll make a very late attempt to clue things up after the break.

Legends Of Tomorrow Trailer…The Atom Actually Shrinks This Time

So, the CW has had a lot of success with Arrow and The Flash, so why not use some more characters from their combined universe that Watson already hates as a concept to make a team show?

Legends of Tomorrow is that show, featuring the Atom, a resurrected Sara Lance as the White Canary, Captain Cold and Heat Wave, Firestorm, Hawkgirl, and a Rip Hunter with that smarmy demeanor that makes you just want to pop the guy in the face.  With what looks like a guest appearance at least by the Flash, and Vandal Savage as a bad guy who may have a giant robot, well, it has the potential to be fun.

Oh, and Ray Palmer finally shrinks.

Jimmy Attempts To Read All Of Convergence: Week Four Part One

It’s nice to see Convergence actually take itself a bit seriously this week and not just seem like the old Marvel “Assistants Editor’s Month” where it was just a free for all with no care or consequences.  They even make attempts to address recent events in the DCU and incorporate them.  Particularly interesting because they involve the former New 52, which to this point, outside of Superman’s appearance in issue #0 and the small Superman: Doomed tie-in, has been kept at a distance.
