What Are The Chances Captain America Civil War Outgrosses Batman V. Superman On Opening Weekend?

civilwarReaders of this blog and listeners to our podcast know that I love box office numbers.  I’ve also recently become intrigued by the Good Judgment project after hearing about them on the Freakonomics podcast.  Their website has a number of political, news, and pop culture questions they invite the public to predict and they recently asked what were the chances that Civil War would outgross Batman v. Superman (which brought in an amazing $166M on opening weekend).

I was surprised to see so many people saying Civil War would outgross Batsoup with almost not thought into the matter, so I decided to make my own prediction and analysis.  Jump after the break to read why I think it is unlikely for Civil War to beat Batsoup and let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Bento Review: Marvel Masterworks Iron Man Volume 2

51Laoy33+wL._AC_UL320_SR212,320_

I finished off the December Bento box pile with one I had some minor mixed feelings for:  a Marvel Masterworks volume of old 1960s Iron Man adventures.

The mixed feelings were because while I actually get a kick out of Silver Age screwiness, I’m not much of a fan of Iron Man when he’s not also Robert Downey Jr.

Review and maybe some mild SPOILERS after the cut.

Gabbing Geek Review: Box Office Year to Date

Hollywood_El_Capitan_box_office

We here at Gabbing Geek LOVE box office reports.  Ok….JUST me and Ryan.  Everyone else seems to hate them.  We’ve talked a lot about it the last few weeks, so let’s look at the winners and losers of this year’s box office as we wait for the Martian to officially kick off the Fall movie season.

Slightly Misplaced Comic Book Heroes Case Files #28: Madame Xanadu

Look! It's an iconic hero!
Look! It’s an iconic hero!  No, it’s not Wonder Woman!

Once upon a time, many moons ago, the Gabbing Geeks held their first Watercooler discussion to talk about iconic characters who hadn’t gotten a movie yet or had one in development.  Jenny, for some reason, chose Madame Xanadu.

Now, I don’t know how Jenny defines “iconic”.  I would define it as a character that is so recognizable that even people outside the fan group recognize the character.  Superman is an iconic hero.  So is Batman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman.  Iron Man probably is thanks to Robert Downey Jr.  Other characters may be recognizable to people who are fans of comics in general, but not necessarily of the character itself.  Aquaman, the Flash, and Captain America probably all fit that group.

But Madame Xanadu?  Well, Jenny had offered to fill in a Misplaced Hero file during my vacation for this character, so Jenny believed that Madame Xanadu is somehow both misplaced and iconic…

Which is she?  Check after the cut. Continue reading Slightly Misplaced Comic Book Heroes Case Files #28: Madame Xanadu

Shooting Stars: Which Hollywood Superstars Are Losing Their Edge?

depp pirates

In an article originally published in January, Gabbing Geek asked whether Johnny Depp was intentionally trying to end his A-List movie star status.  The quirky Depp may be tired of franchises, but there are other A-listers who seem to be on the same downward trajectory.  They, however, don’t seem to WANT to be shooting stars.  Whose careers are in the toilet and what can they do to can back on top?  We at Gabbing Geek investigate!

Epic Age of Ultron Takedown

Age of Ultron opens.

Sometimes other people can express your views in a much more elegant way.  For me that is “most of the time.”  Wired published an epic dissection of the bleak future of the MCU that is to the beat of the drum I’ve been banging about shared universes since BEFORE Age of Ultron came out.

Disney: Just Because You HAVE Leverage…

21.-ops.-Scrooge-McDuck.-Azizonomics

Disney, the company that said Robert Downey, Jr was being greedy for asking for $50M a picture to play Tony Stark, just tried to play Scrooge McDuck….but then had to back off!
