Readers of this blog and listeners to our podcast know that I love box office numbers. I’ve also recently become intrigued by the Good Judgment project after hearing about them on the Freakonomics podcast. Their website has a number of political, news, and pop culture questions they invite the public to predict and they recently asked what were the chances that Civil War would outgross Batman v. Superman (which brought in an amazing $166M on opening weekend).
I was surprised to see so many people saying Civil War would outgross Batsoup with almost not thought into the matter, so I decided to make my own prediction and analysis. Jump after the break to read why I think it is unlikely for Civil War to beat Batsoup and let me know your thoughts in the comments.
2016. Did any of us think we’d live this long? Yeah, probably. We’re Geeks, not morbid.
So, what sort of Geek Entertainment has us here at Gabbing Geek at least a little curious? See behind the cut, with some items getting some expert Geek Commentary from the Geek Guru himself, Jimmy Impossible.
We here at Gabbing Geek LOVE box office reports. Ok….JUST me and Ryan. Everyone else seems to hate them. We’ve talked a lot about it the last few weeks, so let’s look at the winners and losers of this year’s box office as we wait for the Martian to officially kick off the Fall movie season.
Now, I don’t know how Jenny defines “iconic”. I would define it as a character that is so recognizable that even people outside the fan group recognize the character. Superman is an iconic hero. So is Batman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman. Iron Man probably is thanks to Robert Downey Jr. Other characters may be recognizable to people who are fans of comics in general, but not necessarily of the character itself. Aquaman, the Flash, and Captain America probably all fit that group.
But Madame Xanadu? Well, Jenny had offered to fill in a Misplaced Hero file during my vacation for this character, so Jenny believed that Madame Xanadu is somehow both misplaced and iconic…
Yep, our friends over at Screen Junkies are at it again – this time with an honest trailer for Iron Man. We all knew it was coming, it was just a matter of time. But will Tony Stark and his band of woodsman heroes live up to the ridicule? Wait…what were we talking about again? Oh yeah, Iron man – just watch the video. Marvel said so.
Sometimes other people can express your views in a much more elegant way. For me that is “most of the time.” Wired published an epic dissection of the bleak future of the MCU that is to the beat of the drum I’ve been banging about shared universes since BEFORE Age of Ultron came out.
Need to talk about Age of Ultron? We’re here for you. Come listen to Gabbing Geek Episode 36: Everything Is Not Awesome. We cover a Superman documentary, Star Wars movie news, a June movie game, a serious complaint about Avengers toys, and then cover all things Age of Ultron. Give us a listen right now or jump past the break for more info.
