Marvel Presents For The 3rd Time: Spider-Man 2099 #1

spider-man_2099_1

When I was 17, I drank some very good beer.  I drank some very good beer I purchased with a fake ID.  My name was Brian McGee.  I stayed up listening to Queen.  When I was 17.

During my 17th year Marvel also launched their new universe that was set 107 years in the future.  Featuring alternate or future versions of characters such as Spider-Man, Punisher, Doom, X-Men, Fantastic Four and some new characters like Ravage, the year 2099 would become synonymous with Marvel.

The breakout character of the bunch had to be Miguel O’Hara, 2099’s new incarnation of Spider-Man.  Spidey had a new kickass suit designed by Rick Leonardi and prolific comic book writer Peter David was on board to flush out Miguel’s story.  The title proved so popular that Spider-Man 2099 #1 is still the highest selling comic book written by Mr. David.

While the line would eventually peter off, Spidey maintained his popularity and is now back as a mainstay in the Marvel Universe of the present.  After the cut, a spoiler-free look at how this is working out for Miquel in the All-New, All-Different Marvel.

Secret Wars #7 Cover Who’s Who?

Not that Secret Wars #7

I was recently writing up my walk through for Secret Wars #6 and when I reached the end I flipped the page to see a preview of the cover for issue #7.  I had seen it before.  But as it sat there before my eyes, the longer I looked at it, the cooler I realized it was.  “Is that the Lou Ferrigno Hulk?  Forbush Man??  Goose Rider???”  What was going on with this cover?

It seems the Marvel multiverse is back and they are not happy with one Victor Von Doom.  After the cut, check out the full cover and our best guesses at who’s who.  We’ve identified must, but there are a couple we need your help with.  So get your Marvel dukes shined up and have a look…

Marvel Presents For The 4th Time: Amazing Spider-Man #1

Ugh. That glowing green chest spider. Just ugh.

The All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe begins today.  Yes, Secret Wars is still ongoing.  And with issue 6 out today…it still has 3 issues to go.  But Marvel is soldiering on with the relaunch of their new universe.

With Miles Morales joining the MCU proper and supposedly being THE Spider-Man, Peter jetsets around the world in that horrible new costume.  Does any of this make sense?  Does it hold up?  Will it cause me to abandon Spidey like One More Day?  Find out, (mostly) spoiler free, after the cut.  (I say “mostly” as I touch on the basic premise of the setup for this new status quo, but no real plot points.)

Jimmy Attempts To Read All Of Secret Wars Part Six

fantastic-four-319
Editor’s Note: Jimmy, not that Secret Wars 3!!!

Secret Wars continues to build momentum and the tie-ins that I’ve read have mostly been interesting so far.  Most of them feature titles you will likely be familiar with from Marvel crossover events of the past.  It’s interesting to see how Marvel is handling these tie-ins as some seem to be direct sequels (eg. X-Tinction Agenda, Civil War (I’m assuming)) while others just seem to build off the name and aspects of those original events but are really not related (eg. Planet Hulk, Armor Wars).

After the break we’ll look at the latest and best issue of the main mini-series so far, issue three.  Two tie-in series that seem to be in the “related in name only” department in Armor Wars #1 and Infinity Gauntlet #1.  And then take a trip to a slightly skewed version of the future than we’ve seen previously in Secret Wars 2099 #1.  As usual, spoilers will be prevalent.

Also, if you are like me and haven’t read all of Johnathon Hickman’s Avengers run leading up to Secret Wars, be sure to take Tom’s Road To Secret Wars course at gabbinggeekuniversity.com.  The reading materials are online here: Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six and Part Seven.

And that course is a prerequisite to the other parts of this series: Part One, Part Two, Part Three,Part Four, Part Five

Slightly Misplaced Comic Book Hero Case Files #13: Ravage 2099

Ravage_2099_Vol_1_2
Yes, this looks like a respectable businessman.

Comic book universes often look to the future for more superhero adventures.  Some timelines are rather popular and some last a good long time, like the Legion of Superheroes for DC and the original Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel.  Marvel tried another future in 1992 with its 2099 series.  This series of titles was actually somewhat successful with four initial titles, three of which showed revamped, futuristic versions of Marvel characters:  Spider-Man, Doom, and the Punisher.  The X-Men were added later, but among the original four was a single original hero without an existing Marvel hero to base himself off.

That hero was Ravage, a character who morphed multiple times into something new only to be shot off into space and never heard from again.
