Spiders, Spiders Everywhere Part 10 (Death Of Captain Marvel Edition)

death_of_captain_marvel

The Death of Captain Marvel is one of those stories that routinely show up on critics “best of” lists, but that you never get around to reading.  Well, it has been that way for me anyway.  But I recently remedied that as I had to read it to see if it fit in with the Spider-Man Complete Chronology.  Given I’m writing about it in this column series and not in a Chronology update, I think reveals the answer to that.

More about The Death of Captain Marvel and it’s place in Spider-Man lore after the break.

Bento Review: Edge Of Spider-Verse

23439926

Comic Bento apparently wanted me to horn on the storied work of one James “Jimmy” Impossible, who wrote extensively on all things Spider-Verse.  I mean, he wrote seven long posts chronicling every inch of Spider-Verse.  That was before he went insane trying to do the same with Convergence and the entirety of Secret Wars.  See the efforts of his madness with parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Heck, Jimmy covered all the issues in this trade in the third part of his work there.  But I’m writing a review, while Jimmy was giving a plot summary/commentary.  That’s my excuse and I am sticking to it.

The Punisher Problem

punisher

The second season of Daredevil dropped today.  I’m not one for binge watching, personally, so I have no idea how long it will take me to watch the show, but as of this typing I’ve watched the first episode and liked what I saw.

But the promised appearance of the Punisher had me reflecting that, no matter how popular a character he is, he is a weird anomaly in the Marvel pantheon of a character with little discernible personality and few memorable appearances.

Slightly Misplaced Comic Book Heroes Case File #59: Slapstick

Not the guy to call if you are afraid of clowns.
Not the guy to call if you are afraid of clowns.

The comedic superhero is a time-honored tradition.  Sometimes its just a hero like Spider-Man who cracks wise during any given fight.  Other times you get a hero like Plastic Man, who may or may not be the straight man in his own adventures but has goofy powers and kooky adventures to compensate.

Then there’s Slapstick.  He didn’t fight crime.  He played cruel jokes on it.

Spiders, Spiders Everywhere Part 9 (Contest Of Champions Edition)

jrjr-contest-of-champions-101379

If you are old like me you probably remember Marvel Super Hero Contest Of Champions.  It’s a series with a backstory perhaps more interesting than the series itself.  It also paved the way for all those mega crossovers you love/loathe today.

Contest was Marvel’s first limited series.  It was also the first time that one of the big two had all of their heroes come together to battle a single threat.  And while it had no endless amount of tie-in books, it clearly set the stage for the original Secret Wars and DC’s Crisis On Infinite Earth’s, which would appear not long after.

More on Contest and what any of this has to do with our pal Spider-Man and it’s exclusion from the Spider-Man Complete Chronology after the break.

Marvel’s Birthday Gift To Me: Spider-Man In New Civil War Trailer!

civil_war_spider-man
Expect to see this picture a lot. Spider-Man!

I’m too excited to even look too closely at the suit yet.  Classic Spidey, not sure what I think about the flairs.  I like that his eye slots are animated…which make no sense “real life” wise, but is typical Spidey.

Oh, yeah, the new trailer itself is awesome and you can check it out after the cut.

Spider-Man!

Jimmy Attempts To Read All Of Secret Wars 55 (Spider-Island Edition)

spider-island_2

If you’ve spent any amount of time reading articles at Gabbing Geek then you probably know I may have an unhealthy obsession with Spider-Man.  So it only seems fitting that for my (at long last!) final Secret Wars post, it would be Spidey related.

After the break a continuation of the Spider-Island story line with the usual twist on the ending, “what if Spider-Man hadn’t saved the day?”

Spider-Man vs Darth Maul: The Alternate Ending

Uh, uh, uh, uh, Staying Alive! Staying Alive!

Back in December I posted an episode of Super Power Beat Down which featured everyone’s favorite Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man versus that dastardly Dark Lord of the Sith: Darth Maul.  I know you all watched it.

Creators batinthesun have released an alternate ending to that battle, as they often do.  You can watch it after the cut.  And keep an eye out for a very cool cameo.

Super Bowl 50 – Captain America: Civil War

The Cap 3 commercial after the break is short but gives us a clear drawing of lines between the Avengers in the upcoming Civil War.  Still no sign of a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
