Gabbing Geek Water Cooler: Iconic Comic Book Characters Without Their Own Movie

Watercooler Chat

The Gabbing Geek water cooler is a lot more interesting now that Tom and Jimmy are here.  Before they joined, any time Watson, Jenny, and I stood around the cooler talking about an interesting subject Watson would tell us to shut up and “Save it for the podcast!”  (It’s true, I do. – Watson)  Which is really awkward when we’re just trying to order at a restaurant.

But now that we have more people we can actually have water cooler conversations without Watson shutting it down.  And so we thought we’d kick off this first Gabbing Geek Water Cooler chat with the following topic.  Superhero movies are all the rage.  Seriously.  Look it up.  And yet there are so many great characters that still don’t have movies announced.

I tried to find a funny water cooler picture and came across this one from the North Delaware Happening website. And I realized nobody does funny like people in North Delaware, so I went with it.

The question is this–in the modern superhero movie age (defined as starting with Iron Man) what iconic comic book character still doesn’t have a movie announced/released that needs one?

Slightly Misplaced Comics Heroes Case Files #2: The Unknown Soldier

"Hey, Unknown Soldier, STOP HELPING THE NAZIS!"
“Hey, Unknown Soldier, STOP HELPING THE NAZIS!”

He was a mystery man, a soldier and assassin who made Axis agents tremble during World War II.  He also had no name.  That was deliberate.

Sadly, I WILL have to come at you, bro.  Despite being the biggest Aquaman supporter around (there isn’t a ton of competition), I gotta pan this one.  It was a completely phoned in DC Universe Animated Original Movie; a franchise that has shown a tremendous decline in quality since the days of Under the Red Hood and Public Enemies.

Awesome Cosplay Of The Day: Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is definitely iconic, and this Ame-Comi Wonder Woman created by IvyCosplay definitely lives up to that iconic standard. Everything from the shinguards, to the bodice and shoulder piece. It’s stunning. A nod to the photographer  MC Illusion Photography for capturing the magic.

See more pictures after the break.

Does Your Favorite Superhero Movie Pass The Bechdel Test?

Bechdel Test

With Superhero movies becoming more and more popular and prevalent these days, it’s time to discuss the gender balance (or lack there of) we tend to see in such movies. We are familiar with the popularity of Batman, Superman, Spider-man, Ironman, Aquaman(? – if only to Watson), etc. But where do the female superheros fit in this male dominated franchise? With kick-ass characters like Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Blackwidow, and more…how have we failed to properly tip the scales so that movie goers are seeing equal representation on screen?
